They wanted the US to help but we were trying to stay neutral so we set up the lend-lease program to help them out. Also the cash and carry deals.

Two main ways:
- the arm race: countries built up larger and more modern armies in the being leading to WWI;
- the shifting alliances: countries would forge alliances, sometimes secret alliances, wherein if one was attacked, the other would come to its rescue. This is what caused the domino falls declarations of war.
