The Russian army was poorly equipped, poorly run, and left its already precarious economy in shambles. The only thing Russia's entry into WWl did was to force Germany to fight a two-front war. Germany was mostly fighting westward towards France, Belgium and England, but with the involvement of Russia, it had to send troops to the Eastern Front that it might have used to consolidate it's push westward. Yes, the Russians troops were destroyed, but again, Russia's involvement forced the Germans to use troops to fight Russia that they would have preferred to use on the Western Front. This certainly lead to a quicker German defeat than it would have had Germany not had to use troops and equipment to fight the Russians. See the link below for a good synopsis on World War One.
