The state of Baden Germany in the Black Forest did see trench combat, with German troops on one side and the French Army on the other side.

The fighting did not reach into Freiburg, and primarily the war caused hunger and deprivation of necessities in Freiburg.

1915 Food rationing starts. The first bombs fall.

On November 9th, 1918 the people on the Karlsplatz weep for revolution. Soldiers’ councils are established. The Grand Duke abdicates his rule and Baden becomes a republic. Effectively ending Freiburgs participation in the war. Germany never recognizes Baden as a separate republic.

In the 1930′s Hitler comes to Freiburg, holds a rally at the Mosle stadium and Baden becomes a German State again, a few being later it is Garrisoned by the German Army again.
