DESCRIPTION:
Here’s a rare opportunity to get your own original 1881 First Edition of the AMERICAN FARM AND HOME CYCLOPEDIA, one of the biggest and best farming and household guides published during the Victorian era.
The 19th-century family farm was one of America’s last great bastions of self-reliance. As more and more people abandoned their rural roots and went off to work for factory wages in company-owned towns, the farm stood as a symbol of American self-sufficiency. Situated miles away from town centers, the farmer and his family had only themselves to depend on, through good times and bad.
THE AMERICAN FARM AND HOME CYCLOPEDIA was published to meet every need and contingency of life on the farm, from agriculture, husbandry and farm architecture, to housekeeping, cooking, medical care, sports and pastimes. A handy go-to guide for every situation, happenstance, how-to or emergency. Fully illustrated with 1500 illustrations prepared especially for this work.
Think of it as your great-great-grandfather’s Google: A single, reliable, 19th-century resource granting easy access to reams and reams of useful and valuable period information about farming and household industry. It can tell you how to efficiently and productively run a farm, how to raise crops and livestock, how to build your own Victorian farmhouse, barns and other buildings, and how to be healthy, wealthy and wise all your life.

(sorry, couldn’t resist) Even if you’re not all that into farming, the Architecture Section alone is worth the price of purchase, with its many Victorian house designs, floor plans and estimates. The same goes for the cookbook section loaded with more than 400 antique recipes!
This book also has law and business sections to explain the vagaries of common law, patents, water rights, mortgages, banks and banking, Homestead Laws, and more!
There’s even an entire section on home or cottage industries and ways that farmers and their families could make extra money back in the day!
Each and every section of this book was prepared and examined by specialists in the respective fields. As the Introduction states:
This work is an attempt to compress into a form at once useful and convenient all the most authentic information on Agriculture and its related industries, on domestic duties and occupations, interests and conditions, which can be made practically valuable in this country … The author has striven, at the cost of much money and labor, to combine these two objects: a cheap book and a complete collection of practical knowledge on the subjects embraced. Every portion of the work has been prepared expressly for it, and much of it has never been published in any form before. Most of the cuts are from original designs, drawn and engraved for it. A very large portion of it has been obtained at first hands of writers of experience and practical knowledge, of both sexes, and every department has been submitted to persons of known intelligence, integrity and familiarity with the matters treated, to make sure of as complete accuracy as possible.
The illustrations have been made a marked feature of the work, partly because it enhances the interest of any book, even to a professional student, but chiefly because they explain many things better than any verbal description. All but very few have been designed by artists engaged expressly for this work.
For your convenience, I have condensed the Contents into a more manageable format below, providing extra detail about chapters I found most interesting. I’ve also included a great many photos of the book and its handsome illustrations. I hope you’ll take a few moments to have a look.
