Antique Ames US Marked Mexican War Sword 1846:
$379
Here is a Mexican War era sword marked US (Inspector marked JH) 1846, N.P. Ames. Note the US eagle seal on the guard. The sword is 30” long and I believe was cut down and the same time the original grips were replaced with wood. This is as typical Mexican modification. The sword may of been lost or broken during the Mexican war and modified. . I’d also guess the sword saw service well into the Mexican Revolution. The N.P. Ames Company opened its doors in 1791 at their factory at Chelmsford, Massachusetts. In 1832 Nathan P. Ames signed his first contract with the United States government for Foot Artillery swords. Thus began the tradition that exists to this day at America's oldest sword manufacturer. Ames became America's foremost supplier of edged weapons for over a century.
