A trulysplendid incunabulum, not just any printed
book of hours, but something truly splendid. Therefore it made £193,250 or
$292,001 at Christies
Lot 11, 7 July 2010 , London, King Street.
Thisbook of hoursis incomplete but it has 20 of the 23
miniatures, anda prestigious binding. There a great number of small metal
cuts (miniatures in the text) and every page has beautiful metal cut borders,
with the most amazing scenes, hunters, holy men, demons punishing the wicked,
the devil devouring its victims, people gathering fruits, scenes from the life
of Christ.
It is the most sumptous printed book of Hours I have every seen, big and with strong imprints.

RECAPITULATION:
20 (out of 23) large miniatures cuts by the
Master of the Apocalypse Rose of the Sainte-Chapelle/17 small metalcuts plus a depiction of the dance of death in the borders of 13 leaves.
An illuminator possibly identical
with Jehan d’Ypres. He supplied designs for manuscript illumination,
stained
glass, tapestry, and woodcuts for Parisian Horae during the incunable period.
74 leaves (from 96 leaves). Rubrication on a few leaves faded.
Sumptuous
binding signed by Gruel on the spine. Dated on the inside G. Rames 1866
Blinstamped
leather with two miniatures, silk as fly leaves, silver locks, and gilded
edges. In her Bookbinders and their Craft, Prideaux says that the Gruel firm,
founded in 1811, "always had the highest reputation . . . for initiative
in artistic matters, as well as for irreproachable execution in the detail of
its many-sided achievements." The
list of binders who trained at the Gruel atelier is the most distinguished in
Europe.
