BOEING STRATOFORTRESS PHOTO SIGNED BY TEX JOHNSTON
The
Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is a long
range, subsonic, jet-powered bomber capable of carrying 70,000 pounds of
weapons. Before it assumed its present form, it went through several
prototypes, including the YB-52 first flown by the daring maverick jet-age test
pilot, Tex Johnston; Tex is best
remembered for his barrel-roll of a Boeing 367-80 over Lake Washington on
August 7, 1955. His cowboy style of dress and his daring approach to flying is
said to have inspired the character of Major T. J. “King” Kong played by Slim
Pickens in Kubrick’s Dr. Strangeglove. For
your consideration is this vintage 1950s photo of the Boeing YB-52 Stratofortres
during its maiden flight on April 15, 1952, SIGNED in a bold hand by Tex
Johnston.
