Here are some interesting facts that
to me actually makes the ring worth
MORE than if it was a real Sapphire !
º WEIGHT 4.5 Grams
Around the 1890s, synthetic stones
were developed by a Frenchman
named August Verneuil, he
created the stones by using a
process called “flame fusion.”
by taking a blowtorch to powdered
corundum he created a ball
of material that was then shaped
into a cylinder that could be
cut and faceted to form gemstones. Exhibited at the 1900 Paris Exposition,
synthetic Sapphires and Rubys nearly
caused a riot among jewellers
Marcie Imberman, gemologist and
sales representative for Kentshire
Galleries in New York City, often
sees synthetic stones used in the 1920s
in Art deco jewellery, bracelets and rings,
she said that synthetic stones weren’t
always cheaper because French cut
stones could be expensive she says.
They were looking for consistency in
colour and matching the stones was easier.
Another advantage was the availability
of natural gemstone, this was more so
during World War II when they were scarce.
“Synthetic sapphires or rubies were used.
this is why you see them more in
orginal antique pieces of this period.
